Sandy Hawaiian monk seals

The Hawaiian monk seal is one of the most endangered seal species in the world and is found only in the Hawaiian Islands. I spotted a couple of them lounging on the beach at Poipu Beach Park in Kauai, happily rolling in the sand. Lifeguards had placed cones around the seals to keep people at a safe distance—these animals are, rightfully, a highly protected species.
